Essential Hadrian's Wall
This is an awesome day that you can accomplish even if you don’t walk much. We cover a 3.5 mile section of the Wall starting with a guided tour of Housesteads Roman Fort, probably the best example of a Hadrionic Fort on the Wall.
We try to make the place come to life so that by the time you set out along the wall you should be able to see the soldiers, hear their cries and imagine what life may have been like for them.
This section of Wall has superb examples of all the main wall features which will be explained as we go along as will the surrounding history of Reivers and cross border clashes between England and Scotland
As we leave Housesteads expansive views open up and we get to walk on the only section of wall you are officially allowed to walk on. Breaking out of the trees we head off across undulating moorland with the Wall keeping us company most of the way. This is quite unusual as much of the wall has been robbed for local farmhouses and other constructions.
The route traverses a number of gaps and movie buffs may spot a familiar sight along the way. This is not a route march and time is made to enjoy where we are. At Steel Rigg we head back down to the road and if time permits head to Vindolanda to see what they have uncovered this year and experience its reconstructions of sections of Hadrian’s Wall and visit the museum to see some of the world famous Vindolanda writing tablets.

You will need to make your own way to Housesteads visitor centre where we will meet you. We will be only to happy to advise on how best to do this by public transport or supply directions if you’re driving.
