The Lake District Walks

Our Back Yard!

With over 20 years experience climbing and walking in the Lake District, you can’t go wrong choosing to go on a walk with us. We can guide you up the highest peaks but also really enjoy showing you some of the less well-travelled routes.

A walk with us is a full day experience, from the moment we start to your well-earned beer at the end of the day. Stories abound and hidden features are explained so that the landscape comes alive with the people who have lived here – whether Stone Age traders, Viking raiders or Norman invaders.

A Selection of Walks:

Lakes 3,000

Skiddaw: Moderate / hard

We start and finish in the village of Bassenthwaite where the Sun Inn is a welcome finishing point. The ascent of Skiddaw goes up a fantastic ridge and avoids most of the crowds on the standard route. Once the sumit is attained, the views are breathtaking.

Helvellyn: Hard

Two routes are available up Helvellyn. The first up Striding Edge and down Swirral Edge is only for those with a good head for heights. Whilst not too technical, the exposure makes all the steps appear much smaller that they are. A great sense of achievement and one of the Lakes’ big challenges.

The second route takes you from Dunmail Raise, scene of the battle between the last Kind of Cumberland and the English King Edmund, up to Grisedale Tarn and over the tops to Helvellyn via good wide paths. We descent to Thirlmere and return to Dunmail Raise. Superb views all the way with a gradual ascent to the summit. The first views over Ullswater are simply awe inspiring.

Scafell Pike: Hard

The highest mountain in England commands a central location that allows you to see the whole of Lakeland spread out at your feet. We start at Seathwaite and ascend via the Corridor Route, a gradual ascent with a couple of exposed bits that let you know you are getting higher! Spectacular views of Wasdale keep you company as you get to the summit. We return via the tops and follow Grains Ghyll back to Seathwaite. A full day out which makes the beer taste all the better for your sense of achievement!

Historical Walks

Keswick – Rannerdale: Moderate / hard

We follow the legendary story of Lakeland freedom fighters battling against the mighty Norman war machine.

Starting in Keswick we catch a launch across the lake and start walking in the footsteps of the Lakeland defenders against Norman oppression. We pass the sites of two major battles and traverse the hills as Earl Boethar and his followers would have done. Incredible views and a fascinating story accompany this day.

A must in springtime when the Bluebells are out, this is an unusual walk with a spectacular finish.

High Street: Hard

High Street gets its name from the Roman road that traverses it. We wander through a landscape steeped in ancient history, with Bronze Age stone circles, Roman Roads and the highest Shepherds Meet in Lakeland. This is a big day out, traversing the whole eastern side of Ullswater where much of the walking is at height. All in all a brilliant day though!

Undiscovered Gems

Caldbeck Moors: moderate

Nestling to the back of Skiddaw, this area is much overlooked, being more barren and rolling, it has a grandeur all of its own.

We take you off the beaten track quite literally as we follow the miners who lived and worked in the area. Using their old workings we ascend to the tops, traverse around them in beautiful surroundings before descending via stunning waterfalls back to our start point. This is a different perspective on the Lake District and a gentler day than many. A day to contemplate the hidden history within the hills.

Thirlmere on the Quiet: moderate

A great route and one on which I’ve only ever seen two other people. Takes in spectacular waterfalls, high mountain passes, a couple of good summits, hidden tarns and the chance to see wild deer and red squirrels. If you want to know more you will have to come with us!

If you like what you’ve read but feel something a little gentler would be better, then please contact us and we will see what we can organise especially for you.

All walks include your guide, photography and a free photo CD. Transport can also be organised, as can packed lunches and cream teas or spa sessions at the end of the day if required!

Enjoy the outdoors!
